I know...I keep on going back to the Leona Pendant, $108 CAD. For one, it is so different from what I would usually choose to wear; and second (gasp), it's in gold. I hardly ever wear gold. But the minute I saw this necklace and put it around my neck - I was sold. I had to have it, and I love it. Each hand-cut and hand-set Labradorite stone is one of kind; and this necklace was spotted on Dina Pugliese of Breakfast Television!

In light of this occasion, I thought I'd share my first hand encounter with this amazing company. See the events page for more details, and to find out how you can attend.

I attended my first Stella & Dot Trunk Show in January of 2010, and had no idea what I was getting into. At the time, I had a 4 year old adjusting to the idea of becoming a big brother, and a colicky 3 month old who had a strong set of lungs on him. Mirjana, my friend and former corporate gal turned stay-at-home-mom, was a Stylist for this unknown jewellery line and invited me over for some much needed girl time. My mission that night was this: drink a glass of red wine and get the baby to sleep on the car ride there.

I arrived, headed straight for the Lindemans Shiraz and poured myself a glass. In the corner was the carseat with my sleeping baby boy. Both missions accomplished. I was done. I had told my husband early in the evening that I wasn't going to shop - I actually hated jewellery and wore only my wedding bands, engagement ring and my favourite diamond earrings.

Oh how naive I was. I chatted with friends over a glass of wine, as Mirjana passed me a Stella & Dot Look Book. But to be honest - I was hooked even before the Look Book pass was made, as I stared at the fabulous spread of sparkling jewels on the kitchen table. I desperately tried not to take a peek inside the glossy magazine - acting nonchalantly and randomly leafing through the pages. But I could not stop myself from picking up the jewels and trying them all on. First it was Natasha, then it was Jenna...I remember the names of those fabulous necklaces because they became part of my collection and are the two pieces that I will never part with. They are reminders of why I fell in love with Stella & Dot.

I placed my order and headed home with my sleeping baby in tow. But I wasn't satisfied. I spent the next couple hours scouring the website, checking out the jewels, reading about the company and becoming more fascinated with this little jewellery company based out of Burlingame, California. I couldn't sleep. Something drew me to Stella & Dot - Jessica Herrin, Blythe Harris, a company created by women for women, the ability to style my own life, make it as big or small of a business as I want to...

I finally went to bed at 3am, only to get up at 6am with my baby boy to sign up as a Stella & Dot Stylist. It was a small investment of $199, I got $350 in free jewels and I thought: "If anything, I get to keep all this gorgeous jewellery." Here I am almost two years later, and I've attended Stella & Dot's annual Hoopla conference each year, met a fabulous group of business savvy women from all walks of life, and have had an amazing experience building a business that gives me the flexibility to be with my kids, and have something successful to call my own.

I have never looked back...except maybe to mull over the regret of not having finished my glass of wine.

Maternity Wear Doesn't Have to Be Ugly!

I love being pregnant. Morning sickness, sciatic pain, weird food cravings, extreme bloating, weight gain, being poked and prodded…what’s not to love about this wonderful experience? Seriously though, I do love my growing belly, feeling the baby moving, and call me crazy, but I kinda dig childbirth too. The one bone of contention that I do have with being pregnant is…wait for it: the terrible fashion options available.

Yes, ladies. I have managed to bring the miracle of pregnancy and childbirth down to the most superficial level possible: Fashion. It started to irk me a few weeks ago when, while online shopping, I came across a very popular nationwide maternity store claiming that the “new” must-have trend this season is skinny jeans. Really? New? Are we really calling the skinny jean a new trend? Whether you wear them or not, I’d say 98% of the female population knows that the skinny jean has been around for years! Why on earth is it suddenly “new” for pregnant women?

Stella & Dot Snake Orb Pendant, $84

It’s like maternity clothing stores make the assumption that a growing belly is correlated with the demise of a woman’s sense of fashion. That all of a sudden being pregnant means we now love wearing floral patterns, frills, and anything with empire waists. Don’t get me wrong, I know I’m generalizing a bit as there are some great stores that offer stylish fashions. But with this being my third and (most likely) last pregnancy, I can’t justify shopping for expensive designer maternity clothes that I’m going to end up giving away in a few months. I’m just a pregnant fashionista looking for trendy basics that can get me through walking the dog, art class with the toddler, school drop-offs and pick-ups with the big brother, date nights, and weekend romps around the city with the family.

So what’s a gal in the Toronto area to do? If you don't mind spending the dollars, I recommend checking out some fabulous Toronto stores like Evymama and Kick Maternity. Being from the 'burbs, I know that suburban shopping doesn’t lend itself to being uber-chic and it can be summoned up in two words: It sucks. But thank goodness for H & M…and I’m hoping when Top Shop Canada launches that they bring in their trendy maternity line as well. Maternity skinny jeans and leggings from H & M are bountiful in my closet, and the tops are super cute - but I’m cheating by wearing long tunics and sweaters from their regular women’s wear. And, while I’m reliving the days of my youth by wearing head-to-toe black, I’m bumping it up with Stella & Dot jewels to make basic black look bold.

Maternity designers should heed and take note because the bottom-line is this: Pregnancy, childbirth and having children does not make women instantly loose their sense of fashion and style. If anything, motherhood makes us pretty damn sexy!

Does Being Desperate For Tall Boots Make Me A Desperate Housewife?

I had dinner earlier this week with a few girlfriends. There are four of us and we’ve known each other for over 20 years: a single gal, a mom of one returning to work from maternity leave, a stay-at-home mom of three, and me – a stay-at-home mom of two with one on the way. I won’t divulge all the juicy chit-chat we had that evening, but I think I was inadvertently called a “desperate housewife”.

The conversation started out like this:

SAHM of 3: “I have a story to tell you about a mom from the kids’ school who dresses up- hair always done, makeup, jewellery, skinny jeans, tall boots and all.”

"Working" Mom of 1: “Seriously? She dresses like that to pick her kids up from school? Where does she think she’s going?”

SAHM of 3: “Yah – she looks like a total desperate housewife…”

“Ummm…I think you may have just called me a desperate housewife…” I said, as I sat at the dinner table 6-months pregnant and wearing black skinny pants, a fitted tunic top, tall boots, Stella & Dot jewellery and with make up on.

Yes. That’s me. I’m the mom in the schoolyard wearing the skinny jeans and tall boots with my kids in tow. I dress this way even when pregnant (GASP!). Don’t take it the wrong way, I wasn’t offended. It’s just that I didn’t realize my love for fashion would peg me as a ‘desperate housewife’ (whatever that is). And honestly, it’s just not cool for moms to judge other moms by the way they dress. We already have the pressure of constantly wondering whether we’re raising our kids the right way, and now we have to contend with whether we’re dressing the part of a mom. Which brings me to ask, how should moms dress? Am I destined to be unfashionable and wear “mom jeans” because I have kids now?

I kind of thought we were past those days in high school when we judged other girls by how short they wore their skirts – but sadly, it appears that even in our mid-30s we haven’t gotten past that stage. Yes, I’m a stay at home mom, but I love my clothes, shoes, jewellery and luxury handbags. I look at it this way: after I’ve taken care of my family and have given them everything that they need, I deserve to spoil myself every once in a while. I dressed up when I was single and working, when I was working with kids, and I like dressing up now. I could stir the pot and ask why other moms would wear their old sweatpants and runners out in public. Is it because they have no fashion sense? Are they moms who have “given up”? But really, what would be the point? All I would be doing is judging another mom who works hard to take care of her family, puts her kids’ needs first before her own, and is just doing the best that she can – regardless of how she’s dressed.

At the end of the day, it’s about your own personal style. Does it define you? Sure appearances are the first impression, but instead of calling me a ‘desperate housewife’ because I’m in skinny jeans, or a ‘frumpy mom’ because I’m wearing old sweatpants – you can get to know me better by calling me by my name: “Hi, I’m Stef - a mom, wife, and friend.”

Fabulous New Look!

It has been a while since The Fashion Mommies, Stef & Mir have last posted. Things are changing quite a bit around here: we just launched a new face to our e-boutique, we have added a line of handbags to our collection, and I (Stef) am expecting baby #3 in January! Talk about all things fabulous and new!

What remains the same is how amazing the Stella & Dot collection is. I can't get enough of it! Not only am I accessorizing my growing body with gorgeous new baubles, but I'm toting around our luxury leather goods too. My basic uniform now consists of black and more black (an ode to the wardrobe of my youth), but I'm blinging it up with sparkly chandelier or hoop earrings, and bold statement pieces.

Style That Lasts: Priceless

Hello Gorgeous! I love the spring collection from Stella & Dot and felt the urge to go shopping for a whole new wardrobe to match my stunning jewels. Generally, I'm of the mindset that accessories can make all of last year's (and previous years') outfits look brand new. I'd rather buy a great statement piece that works with everything, than spend thousands on a few items that add to my busting-at-the-seams walk-in closet.

Okay. I'm lying - I'd rather do both. But the reality is that people have an eye on their spending, and my advice to those who contemplate that fabulous Stella & Dot Statement Necklace at $218 is this: Have a Trunk Show and get it for free (yes, it's true...my hostesses get it for free); or buy it- because quite frankly, accessories are more bang for your buck than that sweater you've been waiting for to go on sale. Yes, I know...THAT sweater goes with your favourite jeans, dress pants, and that fab on-trend midi skirt. (Note: midi skirt is not a spelling error.) But Darling, that necklace goes farther by updating virtually every look you've ever worn and you'll have it for years to come.

Which brings me back to my urge to shop: since leaving the corporate world 18 months ago and chasing after 2 young children, my wardrobe revolves around Lulu's and jeans when I'm at home. So I had a serious itch to buy myself a new black dress. I declared that I was going to splurge and get that smashing outfit to match my bling. Clearly I'm aware that my urges completely contradicted the advice that I usually espouse; but I just couldn't help myself. So what did i do? I bought two black dresses. That's right...TWO! From...Joe Fresh - both on sale for $14.99 and purchased while I grocery shopped with my youngest child.

Seriously - what unbeatable prices and unbeatable style! My new Stella & Dot jewels look stunning against these easy-to-wear dresses, and it really goes to show that you can make something cheap and chic look like a million bucks. To be quite honest - I am loving Joe Fresh. Every time I'm picking up groceries, I can't help but peruse the aisles seeking out the latest trends. Hello Gorgeous! We have a confession to make: We're both in love with Joe. Joe Fresh that is! Have you checked out the Fall 2010 Collection at any of the Loblaws & Real Canadian Superstores? Walking past makes our hearts race. Neither of us can go grocery shopping without perusing the fabulous aisles featuring the latest hot-off-the-runway looks at downright naughty prices. Oh my! We're getting all hot and bothered just thinking about it!

Mir picked up a long sleeved tee in every colour for a bargain $10 each! We say, if you find something you love - it's better to have the full selection of colours. Otherwise you'll go home kicking yourself that you only purchased the black...and not the grey too! This is the wear-it-out-everywhere shirt - school drop off, shopping, casual dinner date with hubbie...You just can't go wrong with such a basic item.

Stef fell in love with a 100% silk slouchy tunic in grey. Where on earth can you get anything 100% silk at $39 that covers more than just your neck? You'll find it in the Joe Fresh line! The slouchy tunic is the type of piece that you can dress up or dress down. Pair it with tights and throw on some stiletto pumps for a night out on the town, or wear with jeans and casual boots and you've got an outfit for a trip to the apple orchard.

Hi Gorgeous! The past two weekends have seen out-of-the-ordinary behaviour for me: I was at church. Yes my dear! Two weekends in a row - for my niece's baptism last week, and then today for my littlest guy's baptism. It's so out-of-the-ordinary, that my Darling Husband actually made the comment: "You look church appropriate today."

Gasp! I once would have associated such a statement with tradition and staunch white shirts, "slacks", or long skirts that scream conservative - which is what I am not. Further to this, as I get older I fear that 1) I dress too young, or 2) I'm dressing too old. Can a momma still be on trend and look appropriate? The Fashion Mommies say: Yes! Does classic mean I'm aging myself? The Fashion Mommies say: No! It's about mixing classic pieces with trends and accessorizing to add a little sparkle to your wardrobe.

I felt 'church appropriate' today - doing it the Fashion Mommy way!

I realized afterward that what my husband really meant was: "You look fashionably lady-like and chic."

Hello Gorgeous! The Fashion Mommies thought we'd do a spin on today's post and write about Mir's darling little gal, M - who has some serious fashion sense and loves pink!

Whether you’re turning 5 or 30, it’s always about the party. My girl wanted a Barbie-licious party and that’s exactly what she got. It was a dancing & singing Barbie theme which we celebrated at a dance studio. Hello?! It was soooo much fun having the studio to ourselves for 3 hours of 4, 5 & 6 yr old girls high on sugar and dancing wild! Thirteen of M's closest girlfriends were invited and, of course, their fashionable mommies...with a few dads braving the party.

It was all about Baby M (I still call her my baby!) who was glammed up in her tutu. Seriously, too cute! I was told if you want to have a Barbie party we must have the following: Barbie plate, Barbie napkins, Barbie cups, Barbie table cloth, Barbie cake, Barbie loot bags with a Barbie in it, can you get more Barbie than that??? I bet you can guess what she wants to be for Halloween...

I have to send a shout out and thank you Yummy Mummy Club and Mattel, who have helped M discover her inner sparkle and love Barbie even more.

Hello Darling! This weekend was full of parties! I had a fabulous Trunk Show on Saturday, and on Sunday I celebrated my baby girl's birthday. I can't believe how big M is getting. We love Barbie and we love pink, so I had to wear my new dress that's in a fabulous soft shade of pink from H & M that totally works as a tunic.

Can I just tell you how much I love H & M? I seriously have an addiction to this store and can't get enough of the fall line. They've got great trends mixed with classics, and the prices will score you points with your significant other. I know my husband loves that I'm not shopping at Holt Renfrew all the time.

Hmmmm....perhaps we've got a style session in the works for some of our readers! Gosh, wouldn't it be fabulous to go shopping with Stef & me and have us pull pieces together for you? We'll definitely have to revisit this idea in the very near future!

Hello Gorgeous! What a whirlwind weekend - though not as romantic as it sounds. We had two extremely busy, yet fun-filled days of prepping the house for renovations, and then an early Sunday morning hockey practice in a freezing cold arena with tons of hockey moms.

And I did a Mama-thing... I broke out my black jersey turtleneck (one of many that I stash in my closet). Yes, I know what you're thinking Darling: 1) For heaven's sake it's only mid-September; and 2) typical mom move. My retort to that is: 1) It was FREEZING Sunday morning; and 2) my turtleneck was anything but "typical mom" style.

Everybody needs a basic black turtleneck in their wardrobe. It's a classic staple, just like the white cotton dressshirt, the Lululemon yoga pant (I'm a mom and feel this is a MUST-HAVE), and the Little Black Dress. So how do you make the ordinary turtleneck extraordinary? Here's the secret ladies: Details, details, details. Like ruching, a yoke, pleats, scrunched shoulders...you get the point. Then accessorize - nothing too fancy, just simple and classic like Stella & Dot's Gold Leaf Earrings (designed by celebrity jewelry Maya Brenner) and the Signature Clover Necklace. Hello Gorgeous! Week 2 into back-to-school and it has just dawned on me...I'm a work-at-home-mama! Good-bye corporate world; hello pleasureville. Yeah right. Hello Doll! In the spirit of last week's rah-rah about back-to-school with our little darlings, we thought it fitting that this week we share some Back-to-Business basics! If you've ever had an itch to join something fabulous, now's the time. In the direct selling business, everyone talks a good game about ground floor opportunity. But is it really ground floor when you have over a million reps across North America? I'm referring to a very well-known beauty brand that all the ladies know of.

When you look at the growth of Stella & Dot since its inception in 2004, you can see how far we've come and where we're heading. With just over 10,000 reps in the U.S. and Canada, we are definitely on the upward trend. In Toronto alone, there are just a handful of Stella & Dot Stylists, and we're looking for hundreds more of fabulous stylin' women to be our brand ambassadors.

In our past work lives, Mir & I worked for the largest IT distributor in the world - we've seen it all from selling, marketing, inventory and turns, pricing and everything else in between. Gone are the days of worrying about the cost of carrying inventory, meeting stringent targets, and working for the man or woman at the top of the food chain. Instead, we work for ourselves.

So why did we choose Stella & Dot? Well, it kind of fell into place with our lifestyle. Stella & Dot's mission is: "To give every woman the means to style her own life"; and they really mean it. Hello Gorgeous! A big thanks to the Yummy Mummy Club, as this past weekend, my daughter M and I walked the “Pink Carpet” at the movie premier of Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale. M was esctatic about the show, and I was ecstatic about meeting the lovely ladies of the deliciously cheeky Yummy Mummy Club - created by mom-preneur Erica Ehm of MuchMusic VJ fame. M was in for a treat, who enjoyed the afternoon with her cousins; and Barbie, herself, even made an appearance, sending all the girls wild with excitement. The event was a ton of fun for all the little Barbies at heart…and for us mommies who love living in a Barbie world.

The night before the event, the question remained...what was I to wear? Since Barbie is hip and trendy, we had to make sure we arrived in style and very Barbie-licious. M wore her princess pink dress with the Stella & Dot Allie necklace and white Gracie flower in her hair. So adorable! I couldn’t resist adding a touch of pink to my outfit, so I wore one of my favourite Stella & Dot signature necklaces: The Colette – totally rocker chic with mixed chains and metals, softened with pearls and a gorgeous blush coloured ribbon. It’s a versatile piece that allows you to tie it up tight like a choker, have a bow to the side, or tied long – like how I wore it with my black tunic and skinny jeans.

And can I just say this: you HAVE to check out Barbie on the big screen – she does a fantastic job of layering with different lengths of sparkling chains, which is a perfect match to a basic black tee canvas. M even mentioned that her favourite part of the movie was the clothing – “Barbie sure is fashionable"! I don’t recall having this much fun as a child, and the Pink Carpet event was definitely a highlight in our books.

So what did I learn from Barbie this weekend? To discover my inner sparkle and that magic can happen when you believe in yourself. Barbie is truly an inspiration to all girls around the world, and she inspires the little ladies to be anything they want to be! Now I have to ask you – who do you want to be, and are you being her today? Well...what are you waiting for?!? It's time to get Barbie-licious!

Fashion Friday: Dressing "Mommy Chic"

We asked Jane Martin of Toronto Shopoholic to share with us her typical mom style and how she's evolved since leaving the corporate world. Here's what she had to say...

Being away from the office since having my daughter a year and a half ago, I have found that while I dress more casual, my style has evolved. It is too easy as a Mom to get into a "shlumpy" rut, and tell yourself you are too busy to try to look your best. I have found a few easy tricks to dress up my favourite denim to look "Mommy Chic":

Embrace the blouse. A bright print blouse like the one from Tucker above is a great item to go with jeans, a suit or slender skirt. The blouse definitely one ups a plain tee in my opinion. Just find a cut that flatters you and you don’t feel too buttoned down.

Knits don’t have to be boring. When all you wear is a pull over crew neck sweater, it is easy to assume that sweaters are just for warmth and not for style. Try a different cut like the dolman sleeved one above. Short sleeved knits can easily be layered with a long sleeved tee once it gets colder!

A fab jacket can hide a multitude of sins. Ok so let’s say you really didn’t try your hardest when you got dressed this morning; happens to me all the time. Throw on a great statement jacket than enhances your shape and you will be instantly transformed. At least that is how I feel.

Accessories can enhance your look. A beautiful pair of shoes and a great bag can take a simple look, like jeans and a sweater, up a notch. I tend to carry big bags so that I can throw in a change of clothes for my daughter, diapers, snacks and a bottle!

Jewellery is the finishing touch. I love the fall looks from Stella & Dot (The Charlotte and the Stella Vintage link necklaces to name a few), but I tend to gravitate towards the Collette Necklace. I love the combination of soft and hard, pearls and metallic. Plus, I think no matter what you choose to wear, it will work great and stand up to little hands!

Hello Gorgeous! I loved the crisp, chilly weekend weather. It was cool enough to convince me to doll myself up in trendy jeggings by Makers of True Originals and my over-the-knee boots - flat heeled of course since I chase after a my little boy JC, while carrying baby AJ on my hip. I took my darling little crew out for back-to-school shopping and felt fabulous in my hybrid leggings. Alas, whilst perusing the super skinny jeans in a particular store - I had a sales associate approach me to chat about jeggings. Here's how the conversation went:

Sales Associate: "Those jeans are fantastic they're just like jeggings."

Moi: "Oh my! Really?"

Sales Associate: "Oh yes! Jeggings are like leggings; but like - they totally look like jeans...like. You know what I mean?"

Moi: "Yah, I LOVE jeggings and could live in them all the time!"

Sales Associate: (Gasp!) "Really?!?! I had no idea that you knew what jeggings are. Cause, like - you're a mom." (Eyes dart to 10 month old in stroller and 4 year old yanking on my hand.)

Moi: (Crickets chirp in background.)

And then, my fashion bubble burst. But only for a second - I have since recovered. Fashion Mommies can carry the jeggings trend well, when paired with the right top and accessories. It's an fabulous easy weekend outfit that's perfect for busy moms who are on the go. It's comfy, quick, and takes little time to throw these on and run out the door. I mean really - Jeanne Beker is featuring a pair of jeggings in her line Edit, which is launching this month at The Bay. Isn't this like a nod of approval from our own fashionista that moms across Canada can wear this trend too? Like, you know what I mean, Darling?

Stella & Dot might not be familiar to everyone. Where would we have seen this jewelery before?

Although Stella & Dot is exclusive to the direct selling model and you won't see our jewels at any retailers, we've received a lot of buzz in the press about our luxe couture-styled designs.

Many pieces from our collection have been featured in InStyle, Lucky, Woman's Day, O Magazine, Modern Bride - just to name a few.

As a matter of fact, our Sayulita Wood Statement Necklace was just featured in last month's issue of InStyle.

As well, celebrities like Debra Messing, Penelope Cruz, and Sara Ramirez have been seen sporting the latest glam pieces. And for those who follow The Bachelorette, Jillian Harris was and is a fan of Stella & Dot, wearing her jewels both on and off the show.

Aside from shopping for amazing jewelery why would someone want to host a Stella & Dot trunk show?

Trend Report: Layer on the Bling!

Stella & Dot has some great pieces that are multi-stranded and saves you from having to think about how to layer, or what to layer. So Wairton Willie - you know...Canada's most famous groundhog - saw his shadow earlier this month; and thus, predicted another 6 more (long) weeks of winter. I had an awesome "Get Gorgeous" launch last Friday evening with some gals who know all about accessorizing with the latest in couture-style jewels.
